Coming Soon: Thumb Drives of Terabyte Capacity

Arizona State University has developed a storage technology that could drive million chunks of data in to a single disk. This technology is Branded as Programmable Metallization Cell. According to the research head this technology is cheaper and more energy efficient than flash memory.
This new technology is expected to replace the Flash memory. Flash memory that features large current eventually degrades the cells making it non-writable. Unlike Flash memory, The Programmable Metallization Cell (PMC) has longer-life and also read/write process is almost reversible.
This new storage technology stands of its own as it is not built upon any existing one. According to one in the research team,
The Programmable Metallization Cell creates nanowires from copper atoms, the size of a virus to record binary ones and zeros.
PMC can be scaled down to few ion widths (in terms of nanometres) making it suitable for production of ultra compact storage media. It is also simple in operation and hence can be built easier incurring the least cost.
The explanation sound to be quite promising as it takes up storage into atomic level. You can expect high capacity thumb drives built on this technology with in 18 months. Arizona State’s business wing has already licensed this technology to three companies. Coming are the days of high performance, least power consuming cheap memories.
